The word bespoke has real importance when it comes to Burgundy Bespoke Jewellers. If you’re unfamiliar with the term it means “tailored” or “designed to fit” and it reflects our ethos when it comes to crafting jewellery. We believe that every Australian should be able to have a piece of jewellery designed to fit their story.

And it is stories, in which love blossoms, that make working in this trade such a joy. After all, how many craftspeople get to participate in creating the perfect union between two people? Not many.  With that in mind we’d like to tell you the story behind the word “bespoke” and why it is doubly fitting for the jewellers’ craft.

The Word Bespoke And Its Origins In Love And Romance

The earliest use of the word “bespoke” was in fact, “bespeak”. English is a funny language and words have a tendency to transform over the years and these two are pretty close. Back then it meant to “speak for something.”

So a lawyer might bespeak a defence in court. A teacher might bespeak for a student to an employer. That sort of thing.

However, over time and certainly by 1583 by the time the Oxford English Dictionary was launched, “bespoke” had become the correct form of the adjective while “bespeak” remained the verb form. The meaning had also broadened and it is in this new meaning (comparatively speaking) that we find a touch of romance.

The dictionary stated that the verb meant “to speak for, to engage or to arrange”. In fact one would “bespeak” someone’s hand in marriage. So when a you use a “bespoke” ring as part of your wedding proposal, you are continuing a very old English tradition.

Funnily enough, the first and primary use of the word “bespoke” in modern English is in conjunction with jewellery. The American market is a little less discerning when it comes to the word and is happy to apply “bespoke” to nearly anything such as a motorcycle or a suit. You may have heard the phrase “bespoke suit” on one of your favourite legal dramas because of this.

Ensure Your Love Has A Bespoke Ring To Show For It

Burgundy Bespoke Jewellers believes in romance. We think that the greatest love stories are those created between two people who choose to spend the rest of their lives together and who show their commitment to each other in a binding ceremony.

That commitment always begins with a ring. Yet, all too often it’s simply a ring that came off a production line somewhere in China. Doesn’t your love deserve a better story than that, doesn’t it deserve a better ring?

We think it does. You’d be surprised to find out how affordable a bespoke diamond ring can be and how it can tell the story of your love. So please, before you buy an engagement ring, call us and find out how the word “bespoke” can add romance to your marriage proposal. We promise you, it will be worth it.
