The Word Bespoke And Its Origins In Love And Romance
The earliest use of the word “bespoke” was in fact, “bespeak”. English is a funny language and words have a tendency to transform over the years and these two are pretty close. Back then it meant to “speak for something.”
So a lawyer might bespeak a defence in court. A teacher might bespeak for a student to an employer. That sort of thing.
However, over time and certainly by 1583 by the time the Oxford English Dictionary was launched, “bespoke” had become the correct form of the adjective while “bespeak” remained the verb form. The meaning had also broadened and it is in this new meaning (comparatively speaking) that we find a touch of romance.
The dictionary stated that the verb meant “to speak for, to engage or to arrange”. In fact one would “bespeak” someone’s hand in marriage. So when a you use a “bespoke” ring as part of your wedding proposal, you are continuing a very old English tradition.
Funnily enough, the first and primary use of the word “bespoke” in modern English is in conjunction with jewellery. The American market is a little less discerning when it comes to the word and is happy to apply “bespoke” to nearly anything such as a motorcycle or a suit. You may have heard the phrase “bespoke suit” on one of your favourite legal dramas because of this.
